Developing cross-breeding structures for extensive grazing systems, utilising only indigenous animal genetic resources

چکیده

ICAR Technical Series No 3 Not more than a third of a century ago, a comprehensive theory of systematic cross-breeding in farm animals was fully developed (Smith, 1974; Moav, 1966; Dickerson, 1969; Dickerson, 1973). Since then many experiments have been conducted to provide information about the effect of crossing breeds or strains within farm animal species. Based on these results, efficient industry cross-breeding enterprises have been developed in poultry and pigs. In grazing species, however, even in developed countries, cross-breeding is still a matter of individual farmers who differ very much in their judgement of appropriate mating systems and breeds to be involved.

Livestock straight-breeding system structures for the sustainable intensification of extensive grazing systems

ICAR Technical Series No 3 Animal breeding aims for genetic improvement of livestock by utilising the genetic variation available, both within breeds and between breeds. The animal genetic variation can be used to accommodate interests and farmers’ wishes to make livestock more efficient in using available resources to produce human food and other agricultural products. In general, improved per...

Sustainable Sheep Breeding Programmes in the Tropics: a Framework for Ethiopia

Improvement programmes for small ruminants in the tropics face several constraints that have hampered the establishment and sustainability of such programmes. One major shortfall has been weak planning, particularly poor involvement of livestock owners and other stakeholders in the design and implementation of the programmes. In sub-Saharan Africa, low productivity, high density of animals in r...

Rare livestock breeds: the impacts of diminishing genetic diversity on the future of Agriculture

The diversity in today’s livestock breeds has been shaped largely through the domestication of wild ancestral species and subsequent refinement by human selection for desired traits. Only a small fraction of the genetic diversity from the ancestral species survives in the domestic counterparts. A 2007 report released by UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) "The state of the world's animal...

Livestock Production at the Nexus of Resources Competition and Ethnoreligious Cynicism in Nigeria–Implicative Analysis on Food Security

Nigeria is one of the most malnourished and hunger ridden in the league of developing countries; according to reports of Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) of United Nations estimated daily animal protein intake for developing countries averaged at 4.5 g/head/day at the beginning of this century which has hardly risen to 10 g/head/day into the second decade of the century in Nigeria. This...
